Complaints about lawyers

If you are dissatisfied with a member of the Bar Association, you can make a complaint to the Bar Association’s Disciplinary Committee.

All members of the Swedish Bar Association must follow the professional and ethical standards of the legal profession. The Bar Association’s Code of Conduct is a codification of these standards.

If you are dissatisfied with a member, you may write to the Bar Association to make a complaint. The complaint must be made in writing, and must be signed. Complaints against members are dealt with by the Bar Association’s Disciplinary Committee. Detailed information on the disciplinary procedure and instructions on how to make a complaint are found in the document The supervisory role of the Swedish Bar Association. The Swedish Bar Association also engages in upholding a proactive supervision of advocates in relation to the fulfilment of certain legal instruments (inter alia the Act on anti money laundering).

Matters before the Consumer Disputes Committee

If you think that a lawyer’s bill is too high, or if you have any other dispute with a lawyer, you can bring a matter before the Consumer Disputes Committee.

The Consumer Disputes Committee was approved as an alternative dispute resolution board on the 11 January 2016.

The Committee adjudicates disputes between a consumer and a member of the Swedish Bar Association or a law firm regarding a service which the member or law firm provided to the consumer. See the Code of Conduct, sections 57–68.

For more information about the Committee please see About the Comittee or contact lisa.af.buren@advokatsamfundet.se.
